Last week I had the good fortune of seeing the incredible London-based singer-songwriter Rita Morar support the up and coming spoken word artist Hussain Manawer at the iconic Jazz Café in Camden. The stage was set. Lights dimmed. The music began. Rita made her entry and I witnessed Rita sing her latest single.
Now, if you know me at, you will know that I am blessed to know Rita as a friend but let’s leave those biases aside for this post. Let’s talk about this single.
Originally a 30 second sample on her Soundcloud page in 2015, ‘SIGNS’ became popular through listeners and this initiated Rita and Oman based electronic producer Sound Shikari to collaborate and develop the track further.
With ethereal sounds embedded in this dark dubstep version, Rita felt that Sound Shikari captured the true emotion of the track.
Rita explains, ‘SIGNS can take on many dimensions and can be interpreted in many ways. I always have been moved by Sound Shikari’s music so I knew that he would approach the song in a compassionate way to bring out the feeling of loss and hope. With the haunting santoor sounds along with firm beat and bass, listening to this fusion blows my mind every time’
Oman based Producer Sound Shikari adds his thoughts on ‘SIGNS’:
‘Growing up in Oman I listened to my father sing classical and play the harmonium since a very young age. I always knew that I had to make music which expressed the beauty and the evil of this world. Working with Rita Morar on ‘SIGNS’ is the perfect example of that. Her soulful voice on this track makes that connection perfectly. I was very fortunate to be given this opportunity to work with Rita Morar and hopefully there will more in the future’
