Ayrton Senna is considered one of the greatest Formula one drivers of all time. Hailing fromBrazilthis 3 times world champion raced with Toleman, Lotus, Mclaren and Williams before his premature passing in 1994, aged just 34, at the San Marino Grand Prix.
The whole film is a documentary featuring footage and commentary from races, filming from pre race meets , conversation with his friends, colleagues and family, his strive for perfection and how it took him years to win the race in his Home country.
The film begins by telling us about Ayrton Senna’s entry into the world of F1. He came fromBrazilin the early 80’s with a fairly privileged background as a Go-Karting racer. It also focus’s on his famous rivalry with team mate Alain Prost. Emotions will kick in when you see the heartbreaking footage of the crash that caused his demise in 1994 at theSan Marinogrand prix where his steering column reportedly failed.
There is also a focus on how he set up the Ayrton Senna Institute which continues to help under privileged children in his nativeBrazil.
This is a movie which appeals to not just F1 fans but to anyone that enjoys an adrenaline rush and is driven to push to the limit to achieve. The racing scenes make you feel as if you are part of the action, right there with Ayrton in the driver’s seat feeling the exhilaration. A must watch movie whether you are a F1 fan or not. You can’t but help to get carried away with the sounds, action and words of Senna.

Let’s end with a quote from Ayrton himself “The harder I push, the more I find within myself. I am always looking for the next step, a different world to go into, areas where I have not been before. It’s lonely driving a Grand Prix car, but very absorbing. I have experienced new sensations and I want more. That is my excitement, my motivation.”
Great film, totally agree that it will appeal to people who have no interest in F1. He’s the perfect documentary subject, so charismatic.
I reviewed it to if you’re interested to read what a huge Senna fan thought of it.http://filmdrivel.wordpress.com/2011/07/23/senna-2011-asif-kapadia/
Glad to see you agree! I dabble with F1 now and then but have really started enjoying it since I saw Senna – a great masterpiece, have you heard about that new F1 movie?
Yeah the Ron Howard one? ‘Rush’ I think it’s called. Not convinced about it but hopefully it’ll surprise me. I’m not sure it’ll be possible to make a decent f1 film that isn’t a documentary.
Fingers crossed!
